Gun Storage Check Week Kicks Off Sept. 1
Recognizing the importance of National Suicide Prevention Month, held in September annually, NSSF is running its Gun Storage Check Week campaign Sept. 1–7. Gun Storage Check Week reminds firearm owners to take a moment and review their storage practices to “Make Sure It’s Secure.”
During Gun Storage Check Week, those visiting GunStorageCheck.org will have access to a variety of materials and educational resources to learn more about safely securing their firearms. In correlation with National Suicide Prevention Month, resources highlighting the message that suicide is preventable and secure gun storage can save lives. Resources available include NSSF-American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) brochure on suicide prevention that discusses warning signs and how to have a “brave conversation” with someone they’re worried about. The NSSF-AFSP suicide prevention toolkit is available to firearm retailers and shooting ranges.
NSSF is asking firearm owners and their families to share this safety message with their communities. Providing time and distance between a person in an acute mental health or suicidal crisis and any means of harm can save a life. This pause allows time for immediate thoughts of suicide to pass and for connecting a person with care. Additionally, organizations, companies, law enforcement and individuals can help increase the visibility of Gun Storage Check Week by using promotional materials available at GunStorageCheck.org.
NSSF encourages everyone to remember the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: 988 is the number to call/text/chat if you or someone you know is struggling.
