Every Minute Of The Day
Each year, I look forward to Domo’s “Data Never Sleeps” report. Luckily for me, this year’s hit my inbox just before my deadline for this column. The report provides a range of stats on internet and app usage, including the collective hours we spend online and where we spend them. The “every minute of the day” statistics never cease to amaze me.
According to the report, as of November 2023, the internet represents 5.2 billion people — roughly 65% of the world’s total population. Every minute of the day, those 5.2 billion people are watching the equivalent of 43 years’ worth of streaming content. They’re sending 694,000 Instagram Reels by way of direct message and spending $455,000 shopping on Amazon. Every minute of the day, 6.3 million searches happen on Google and people send 241 million emails. For context, there were only 2 million Google queries per minute in 2013 and $283,000 spent on Amazon per minute in 2021.
When I shared the infographic with our team, Roy Huntington responded, “An amazing thing is to think before the internet, all that time spent would have been spent on other things like reading, painting, being outside, talking to friends on the phone, cooking, visiting, working in a shop, playing with the kids …”
And he’s right! The reality is, the world is changing rapidly. Like it or not, we’ve opened Pandora’s box and there is no closing it. According to Statistica, the total amount of data predicted to be created, captured, copied and consumed globally in 2023 is 120 zettabytes, a number projected to grow to 181 zettabytes by 2025. If you’re like me and wondering “What the heck is a zettabyte?” it’s equal to a trillion gigabytes.
So, the next time you’re wondering if FMG’s digital offerings should be part of your marketing plan, consider this your answer. After all, data never sleeps.
