Honored American Veterans Afield (HAVA) announces the continued success of its Family Days, with two recent events held at the ACADEMI Training Center and Rockcastle Shooting Center. This success is due, in part, to the industry’s sustained commitment to the long-term recovery of disabled veterans and their families.
In June, HAVA/ACADEMI welcomed nearly 400 veterans and family members to the 7,000-acre ACADEMI Training Center in Moyock, N.C., for the Fourth Annual Family Day. Veterans, their families and volunteers participated in a day of shooting, food, gifts and fellowship. Each veteran received a gift bag of outdoor products, every child won a prize and the industry-sponsored raffle awarded over $15,000 in high-value outdoor products to attendees. Veterans enjoyed the opportunity to shoot with their spouses on eight stages of fire, while the youth learned gun safety and how to shoot on airsoft ranges — as well as experiencing urban warfare training in the facility’s mock town. In addition, attendees were treated to a 3-Gun exhibition by world-champion professional shooter Todd Jarrett.
“One of HAVA’s best-organized events is held each spring with over 100 ACADEMI employee volunteers helping to bring joy to the American heroes whom we serve,” Tom Taylor, HAVA Chairman. “The facility is world-class and the ACADEMI employees take exceptional pride in helping to stage one of the best veteran-service outdoor events in existence.”
The majority of ACADEMI’s staff has a military background, so this annual event takes on even more importance to the facility.
“It’s our privilege to host such a marquee event as the HAVA/ACADEMI family day each year,” said Chris Sorenson, ACADEMI president and a retired U.S. Army Colonel and combat veteran. “Since most of our people are from the military community, we relish the chance to give back a small measure of what our guests deserve for their heroic service. We can’t do enough for these dedicated Americans, and we’ll keep doing it as long as they need us to serve.”

AVA/Rockcastle Family Day
In September, 275 veterans and family members attended the Third Annual HAVA/Rockcastle Family Day, held at the Rockcastle Shooting Center At Park Mammoth Resort in Park City, Ky. Over 100 disabled veterans and injured active-duty military participated in the event — which featured 10 stages of fire, an archery exhibition by Byron Ferguson and airsoft ranges and bounce houses for kids.
All participants received a backpack of outdoor products and engaged in a raffle of hunting and shooting prizes. Industry companies, through HAVA, covered the full cost of the event.
“Family Days continue to be the backbone of HAVA’s delivery of the industry’s support for the military community, now completing our eighth year of continuously broadening service,” Taylor said. “We’re very proud of our 18-state hunt series as well, but it’s the Family Day format that allows us to make the most comprehensive impact on the entire family unit which has given so much of their lives to the cause of freedom.”
